Paved roads versus off-road use
Rental vehicles should stay on permitted public roads and within the written agreement. A vehicle marketed as an SUV is not automatically insured for off-road tracks. When a destination involves an unpaved approach, ask before driving rather than assuming it is allowed.
Balos Lagoon: use the boat option
The well-known road towards the Balos parking area is unpaved and is not allowed under the stated rental rules. Drive only on the permitted route to Kissamos and use the passenger boat to reach Balos.
Mountain roads take longer than they look
Roads to inland villages and the south coast can include bends, elevation changes and slower local traffic. The map distance alone is not a reliable estimate for a relaxed day trip. Build in time for stops, parking and the return journey before dark.
Parking in Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion
Old-town areas often have pedestrian zones, narrow streets and limited central parking. Use marked parking areas and avoid following navigation into restricted or very narrow streets. Smaller categories are often easier when the itinerary includes several city stays.
Fuel and route planning
Start long day trips with enough fuel and do not assume a station will be available on every remote section. Confirm the fuel-return policy at pickup. For south-coast routes, plan the return rather than adding destinations late in the day.
Choosing the right category
- Economy: best for parking and light luggage.
- Compact: balanced option for mixed routes.
- Automatic: useful for drivers who want less workload.
- SUV: space and comfort on permitted roads, not off-road access.
- Minivan: confirm luggage space when all seats are occupied.
Before leaving the pickup point
Check the vehicle condition, fuel, emergency contact, return instructions, permitted driver names and insurance option. Store the rental contact number and a copy of the agreement where it is easy to access.
