For one or two travellers with light luggage, economy or compact is usually easiest. Automatic is useful for drivers who prefer less workload. Families should prioritise real luggage space. SUVs provide comfort and capacity on permitted paved roads but do not make off-road routes acceptable.
Category chooser
| Travel situation | Good starting category | Main reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 people, light luggage, city stays | Economy | Easier parking and enough space when luggage is limited. |
| 2–4 people, mixed island travel | Compact | Better balance of space, comfort and manoeuvrability. |
| Driver wants simpler gear changes | Automatic | Reduces workload in traffic and on unfamiliar roads. |
| Family with several suitcases | Compact SUV or larger category | Cabin and boot space matter more than the badge. |
| Five to seven passengers | Fiat Doblo / Dacia Jogger / VW Caddy Maxi or similar | Confirm luggage room when all seats are occupied. |
| Eight or nine passengers | Renault Trafic / Opel Vivaro / Ford Transit Custom or similar | Best requested early because availability is limited. |
| Couple, light luggage, summer coastal trips | Convertible | Chosen for experience rather than practicality. |
Start with passengers and luggage
The most common mistake is choosing only by passenger count. Four adults with four large suitcases may need more luggage space than a small five-seat car provides. When requesting a quote, describe the approximate luggage as well as the number of people.
Manual or automatic?
Manual cars are common and can offer more choice. Automatic vehicles are useful for travellers who do not regularly drive manual, prefer a simpler experience or expect city traffic and frequent hill starts. Because automatic supply is smaller, request it explicitly rather than assuming the category will be automatic.
Does an SUV help on Crete?
An SUV can provide higher seating, luggage capacity and comfort. It does not change the rental agreement. Off-road tracks, rough access roads and the unpaved road towards Balos may remain prohibited regardless of vehicle type.
Seven-seat and nine-seat vehicles
Large groups should request early and give an honest suitcase count. A seven-seat vehicle with every seat occupied may have limited rear luggage space. Sometimes two smaller cars are more practical than one fully occupied minivan, especially when the group has several large cases.
Before accepting the category
This guide provides general planning information. Availability, price, insurance, driver requirements and route restrictions must be confirmed in the written quote and rental agreement.
